TITLE | Petani Bali
Barong is the most popular and beloved character in Bali’s colourful creative culture. A powerful, mythical creature, he is the island’s protector and dispeller of evil spirits. Barong does not come from Hindu mythology, but from Bali’s animistic past. Somewhat lion-like, he may be related to other such “king of beasts” mythical images found all over Asia and Europe. In the “Barong Play” two men put on his huge costume, and battle Rangda, Bali’s Demon-Queen…always to a draw… ensuring endless rematches. Barong masks is treated as a very sacred object.
